John O’Connell has forty years of experience in independent schools as a headmaster, head of school, teacher, coach, and administrator. He taught Latin and English, and then became head of the Upper School at Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth, Texas, for eighteen years.

For the past twenty-three years, John has been Headmaster of Houston Academy in Dothan, Alabama. During his career he has served as chair for numerous accreditation teams for the Southern Association of Independent Schools, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (AdvancEd), and the Independent School Association of the Southwest.

As the head of Houston Academy, John successfully built enrollment, balanced budgets, hired excellent faculty, and dealt with parents. He has been an active member of NACAC, NAIS, College Board, and served as president of the Alabama Association of Independent Schools. John was a part of the Peace Corps in Truk, Micronesia from 1968 – 1969.

John is available to assist schools as a consultant as well as conduct searches for key administrators and heads of school as an Associate of Scott Healy & Associates. John has been named Vice President of Scott Healy & Associates and heads up the new Division of Secondary Education.
