About The Institution

The University and the Alfred Community: Alfred University was founded in 1836 by liberal, independent thinkers who placed high value on education for all citizens. A Phi Beta Kappa institution, it is also the second oldest coeducational college in the United States. With a total enrollment of nearly 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students, Alfred’s eclectic academic offerings are remarkable ranging from the liberal arts and sciences, art and design, engineering, business, education, counseling and school psychology.

Part of the appeal and charm of the Alfred environment is its setting on New York’s gorgeous Southern Tier. Similar to the settings of the great early American colleges of the northeast, Alfred’s small town location is an ideal “immersion environment”, where the development of the whole person – intellectual, social, ethical, physical, spiritual - is celebrated and well embedded in our history. Our enthusiastic and supportive alumni are our best example of a campus well built for the development of rich, lasting and beneficial relationships.
