The Department of Physician Assistant Education at Saint Louis University (SLU), in partnership with the national search firm of Scott Healy & Associates, invites applications for the position of Department Chair and Program Director. This is a full-time, 12-month faculty position. The position may be tenure or non-tenure track at the rank of Associate Professor/Professor depending upon the candidate’s qualifications. Reporting directly to the Dean, the successful candidate will be responsible for all administrative and curricular aspects of the PA program. Anticipated start date is Spring, 2019, but the position can be available earlier for the appropriate candidate.
Ranked # 27 in the country by U. S. News and World Report, SLU’s physician assistant program offers a strong, established didactic and clinical curriculum. In addition to the principal faculty members, the program draws from a network of experts in their respective fields. The classroom and clinical experiences in the program will foster intellectual curiosity and develop personal and professional responsibility.
SLU’s PA program accepts 46 students each year and is a 27 month, full-time graduate program. Students completing the curriculum earn the Master of Medical Science degree. Since graduating its first class in 1973, the SLU PA program has maintained excellent pass rates on the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE). The average first-time PANCE pass rate for the last five years is 99 percent.
The Saint Louis University PA program is comprised of an experienced and dedicated faculty with 80 plus years of PA education experience. The department is supported by a full-time staff of three.
The chairperson and program director will:
- Serve as the academic leader of the Department of PA Education and the PA program;
- Develop a vision and long-range plan as it relates to both the college strategic map and university strategic plan while appropriately reflecting the future of the department;
- Promote excellence in teaching, research, and service;
- Appropriately allocate resources and determine priorities as an advocate for the department and in a manner consistent with college and university practices;
- Select, cultivate and retain the most qualified faculty and staff;
- Make recommendations to the dean regarding faculty appointments, tenure, leaves of absence consistent with college and university policy;
- Manage faculty workload and assign teaching schedules to meet student needs consistent with college and university policy;
- Teach, conduct research, and pursue scholarly activities as administrative demands allow;
- Actively participate in the recruitment, admission, and retention of students;
- Provide guidance for the evaluation and development of curriculum;
- Administer the accreditation process and compliance with professional organization requirements;
- Serve as a member of the Dean’s Coordinating Council;
- Facilitate effective communication with the department faculty and staff, as well as administrators from the college and university;
- Delegate authority and responsibility consistent with faculty and staff strengths and interests within the context of department needs and available resources.
Provides leadership to PA faculty, staff, and students within the program; Facilitates communication, clarification, and implementation of university and department policies and procedures; provides leadership through planning, implementation, and evaluation of the PA Program.
The Successful Candidate Should Meet the Following Qualifications:
- Current NCCPA certification and Masters degree required for PA candidates, doctoral degree preferred;
- Board certification required for MD and DO candidates;
- Five years of clinical experience as a PA, MD, or DO;
- Five years of faculty experience in a PA program;
- Eligibility for PA licensure in Missouri or Illinois;
- Experience with ARC-PA accreditation;
- Leadership and management experience in a PA Program;
- Involvement and/or knowledge of program organization, administration, fiscal management, continuous review and analysis, research/scholarship, planning, development and participation in accreditation processes.
